With Albert Ammons and Meade Lux Lewis, Pete Johnson was one of the US boogie-woogie giants known as ‘The Boogie Woogie Trio’. His contribution and influence over the genre is equal to Albert and Meade’s and he performed with both at New York’s Carnegie Hall in the 1938 concert ‘From Spirituals to Swing’ which it is said spawned the boogie-woogie craze that lasted well into the 1940s.

With Albert Ammons, he appeared in short film ‘The Boogie Woogie Dream’ which is the only known footage of the pair. Beneath is ‘Roll Em Pete’, recorded in 1938 which some say was the first ever rock n roll record.
