US pianist and singer who learnt piano from her brother (who worked with boogie-woogie pianist Pine Top Smith). Cleo was the first female instrumentalist to be named an NEA Jazz Master. She recorded Boogie Woogie / Pelican Stomp in 1932 and played an original version of Pinetop’s in the key of F and with walking bass throughout. Below is one of her famous boogie-woogies. An interview first broadcast in 1985 is also available in which she performs and talks about her career.
